Exegesis of Nican Mopohua
"Comment". "Meticulous Precision"
"We have already said that the Nican Mopohua is not a mere story or instructive
tale, and following are some of the reasons why: Tales are fantasy, they lack
precision: they always go: "once upon a time, in a remote country....". Tales
can not give details regarding places, dates and protagonists. If they gave
all these details they would lose their charm.
In the case of the Nican Mopohua the story begins: "Ten years after......" The story is clear right from the very beginning. It even becomes clearer because it gives a very detailed and meticulous account of all kinds of chronological and toponymical references. The dates, the time of the day, the places, the people, the circumstances, even the days of the week, are precisely stated – everything can be identified and controlled. The opposite of a legend, a tale or a mere instructive story. Later we will see the importance of having a precise date.
Sometimes called the fifth evangel, the Guadalupan account contains the most important points needed in order to establish Christ’s doctrine, the spiritual position of Mary as Mother of God and mediator of mankind before Him.
It also provides the elements that make Her the first and most important evangelizer of the people of the New World.
Through Her message of hope for the whole world, Her behavior is a true example for us to follow.
